At the beginning of the year 2020, a pandemic hit the world. I was forewarned and informed that there was a new virus that would become known as COVID-19. At the time, I was working as a health care worker in a medical office. Whatever information we received from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention was shared, but knowledge of how the virus spreads was very vague. Everyone was taught to quarantine at home, wash their hands, practice social distancing, and wear a mask. I tried my best to be safe!
My mother turned eighty-nine, October 4th, 2020. This would be our last family gathering with her this year. The celebration of her birthday was held outdoors where the people greeted her while she sat in the car. Momma never quite understood the mask thing. It made her feel disrespected because she couldn’t understand what everyone was saying. Yet, we did what we had to do.
The next time I saw her was the Sunday before the week of Thanksgiving because I knew I would not be able to connect with her on Thanksgiving Day. So, I went to see her and said hello while social distancing. A few family members had also stopped by and stayed for about thirty minutes. Later that week, I received a call from someone telling me they had tested positive for COVID-19 and I needed to get screened. I too tested positive!
It was a month-long journey full of hills and valley moments, scary dark moments but I am glad to report, the Lord was my Shepherd and He Covered me. COVID-19 has a lot of uncertainties and carries a lot of fear but with God, we walk by faith, not by sight. He led me out of that darkness.
Check out my book, The Valley of the Shadow of Death, where I used the 23rd Psalm as my guide to sharing how like a Good Shepherd, He was with me.
